about

About:
The Learning Tree is inspired by the works of Gordon Parks & Devin Allen. Parks pioneered a philosophy of weaponizing your art against systematic racism, intolerance, and poverty lead to becoming the most prominent photographer of his era as well as the first African American photographer for Life and Vogue magazines. The title of the song serves as a tribute to Park’s book and movie. Devin Allen, a West Baltimore native & Gordon Parks Foundation fellow, gained national attention when his documentary photograph of the Baltimore Uprising was published on a Time Magazine cover in May 2015 – only the third time the work of an amateur photographer had been showcased there. in 2020, he received his second Time Magazine cover for his coverage of the 2020 Uprising. Both Parks and Allen were self-taught.

lyrics

Intro:
Dave Chappelle excerpt from 8:46

Hook:
Chopped & screwed sample

Bridge:
Pop the champagne
And pass me a flute
We hit a lick
It's time to recoup
I look to the sky
Relate to the moon
Controlling the tides
I said what I said
I do what I do
Payback came from way back
Gimme the loot
My day 1s and my day 30s is ready to shoot
I got it from them
They gave to me so I give to you ( Uh let's do it)

Verse I:
Before we start let's discuss this
Got a subject to touch up
It's Black Lives Matter
If you don't feel the same well today you getting f**** up
That's big business/ small business
When we meet in the street
Hands up ( Baltimore Club Sample: Hands up thumbs down)
Kept it brief
Pop the champagne
Twist the sour
Why that?
Life's Sweet
Recipe for some strange fruit
We gonna hang you with the same noose
Tape it and put it on loop
Your family gonna see it on news
Free smoke word to Terry dummy this summer we ready to shoot

Hook:
Chopped & screwed sample

Verse II:
They set a pick ( pick)
I got to the hoop ( hoop)
They threw it up ( up)
I caught an oop (oop)
I made my own constitution
I constitute
It's a new law and order
I got the proof ( proof)
I keep receipts
I got a voice
I got a choice
I gotta speak
So I got a speech ( speech)

Speech:
When you close your eyes at night see the revolution
When you walk up visualize be the revolution
Legend's never die though they bleed the revolution
So at the 2nd line it's in the key of revolution
When you close your eyes at night see the revolution
When you walk up visualize be the revolution
Legend's never die though they bleed the revolution
So at the 2nd line it's in the key of revolution
It's easy to kill a man
Hard to kill an idea
Black Lives Matter
